Your current device type determines the migration strategy and the steps required to migrate earlier SonicOS platforms to SonicOS 8 devices. With the release of SonicOS 8.0 for SonicOS 8 firewall platforms, direct migration from a legacy source device (SonicOS 7, SonicOS 6/6.5 and SOHO-SonicOS 5) to SonicOS 8 target devices is supported.
The following legend applies to the tables appearing in Migrating SonicOS 6 to SonicOS 8 and Migrating SonicOS 7 to SonicOS 8.
| Y | Supported |
| N | Unsupported |
| Y* | Supported but the import fails when VLAN or tunnel interfaces are present in the settings file. |
| Y# | In-product migration is not supported; a Migration App accessible through NSM is required to perform a settings migration. |
Use the Migration App on NSM when migrating between NSa 2650 and the NSa 2800 because of interface differences.
Importing settings from supported firewalls fails if VLANs or tunnel interfaces are present, except when migrating between equivalent models (for example, NSa 2700 → NSa 2800 or NSa 3700 → NSa 3800). To ensure the settings import succeeds, remove any VLAN or tunnel interface configurations before continuing.
Recommended: Alternatively, use the existing Migration Tool to convert the settings to the equivalent Gen 7 firewall format, and then import them into the Gen 8 firewalls.
The following sections summarize the migration paths that best suit your devices.
