Overview of Migration Types

SonicOS upgrade supports two primary methods for migrating configuration settings from legacy SonicWall firewalls to newer devices:

• In‑product migration – Directly imports configuration settings from a supported legacy firewall to a SonicOS 8 device using the built‑in migration wizard.

• NSM Migration App – Enables migration when in‑product migration is not supported, including cases involving non‑full‑match configurations or unsupported interface types.

  Using the NSM migration application allows administrators to migrate supported configurations without disabling features on the source firewall, such as VLANs or tunnel interfaces, prior to migration.

All SonicOS 8 firewalls include an NSM license, allowing administrators to use the NSM Migration App without additional activation.

This guide provides end‑to‑end guidance for migrating settings from earlier SonicWall platforms to SonicOS 8 TZ and NSa Series firewalls. It includes supported models, firmware requirements, known limitations, migration constraints, and recommended best practices.
