Description
Can I migrate from my existing GMS Software installation (Windows) to the new GMS Virtual Appliance?
Resolution
Yes, you should be able to re-use the existing GMS license, registered on Windows software, and re-register the GMS Virtual Appliance using the same serial number and auth code at No cost difference.
You can also import your current managed units into a new GMS installation on a Virtual Appliance. This will allow you to import managed appliances and their properties into GMS so you don’t have to add each unit manually.
Follow the steps below to create an addUnit.xml file from the existing GMS and import it into your new GMS:
- Log into the existing GMS and create an addUnit.xml file by navigating to Console > Management > Settings. This will generate a file containing managed firewall information, which you can import into your new GMS. This allows you to import managed firewalls and their properties into GMS so you don’t have to add each unit manually. Save the file on your workstation.
- The licensing will need to be reset so the GMS serial can be used on the new GMS installation. Call Customer Support and ask them to perform a ‘Reset Trust’ on your GMS serial.
- Log into the System Interface on the new GMS on the Virtual Appliance and perform the registration, using the original GMS serial number.
- Log into the Application Interface and right-click in the unit panel on the left and select ‘Import XML’. Import the addUnit.xml file that you exported in step 1. This will add all of the units managed by the previous GMS installation, and it will create the necessary tasks to acquire the firewalls
Note:
*Your new GMS instance/server should have the same ip as your old GMS instance/server.
**If your new GMS server ip is different, then you need to replace the scheduler IP address on AddUnitxml file (x.x.x.x ) to new GMS server IP
***This method of migration only includes the devices from your existing deployment. No custom configurations (such as Scheduled Reports, Users, etc) or processed syslog data from the GMS Software installation will be available on the GMS Virtual Appliance once the migration is completed.
