Description
This knowledge article provides information on SNMP and log settings for the generation and sending of SNMP traps
Resolution
Resolution for SonicOS 7.X
This release includes significant user interface changes and many new features that are different from the SonicOS 6.5 and earlier firmware. The below resolution is for customers using SonicOS 7.X firmware.
The appliance can generate and send system traps for the following OIDs

The appliance can be configured to send traps through the following configuration:
- Under Device/Settings/SNMP enable SNMP and then click on configure

- Enter a system name for the appliance (This can be anything) and a host where the traps will be sent.

- Go to Device/log/settings and drill down to the event or event category for which traps should be sent.
- Enable the option to send traps and click on accept

- The traps should then be generated and forwarded. You can use packet monitor to verify this by capturing for UDP port 162

Resolution for SonicOS 6.5
This release includes significant user interface changes and many new features that are different from the SonicOS 6.2 and earlier firmware. The below resolution is for customers using SonicOS 6.5 firmware.
For SonicOS 6.5 the configuration is similar, but for the event configuration, which does not contain an option to send traps. The Alert option must be selected instead.
- Go to Manage/Appliance/SNMP
- Enabled SNMP and click on configure

- Enter the IP of the trap collector

- Go to Manage/Log Settings/Base Setup and drill down to the event or category for which traps should be generated.
- Enable the Alert option and make sure the event priority level (2) is set higher or equal to the alert level (1)

Verify using packet monitor that the appliance is sending the traps

NOTE: Trap messages are generated only for the alert message categories normally sent by the SonicWall Security Appliance. For example, attacks, system errors, or blocked Web sites generate trap messages. Traps will not be sent if the alert option is not enabled for these categories.
