SonicOS 8 Migration Requirements Reference Guide

In-product Migration from SonicOS 6 or SonicOS 7 NSv Models to SonicOS 8 NSv

SonicOS 8 supports in-product migration from SonicOS 6 and SonicOS 7 NSv models to SonicOS 8 NSv S, M, and L subscription models. The migration uses a preferences-based import method that allows administrators to transfer configuration settings directly from supported source appliances to the target SonicOS 8 NSv — without requiring an external migration tool.

Supported Migration Paths

Source (SonicOS 6) Source (SonicOS 7) Target (SonicOS 8)
NSv 10, NSv 25, NSv 50, NSv 100 NA NSv XS (Single Core)
NSv 200 NSv 270 NSv S (2 Cores)
NSv 300, NSv 400 NSv 470 NSv M (4 Cores)
NSv 800 NSv 870 NSv L (8 Cores)

Migration Mode

By default, SonicOS 8 NSv platforms boot in Global Mode. Administrators can switch to Unified Policy Engine (UPE) mode from Global Mode after initial boot. Migration is mode-dependent — the source and target must be running the same operational mode.

Migration Path Supported Mode
SonicOS 6 NSvSonicOS 8 NSv Global Mode to Global Mode only
SonicOS 7 NSvSonicOS 8 NSv Policy Mode to Policy Mode
SonicOS 7 NSvSonicOS 8 NSv Global Mode to Global Mode

SonicOS 6 NSv configurations running in Global Mode cannot be imported to a SonicOS 8 NSv running in Policy Mode. The migration will be blocked.

Migration Method

The migration uses the built-in settings import feature on the SonicOS 8 NSv and does not require an external migration tool.

To migrate from a SonicOS 6 or SonicOS 7 NSv

  1. Export the settings/preferences file from the source SonicOS 6 or SonicOS 7 NSv appliance.
  2. Import the settings file to the target SonicOS 8 NSv appliance running the matching operational mode.

For detailed migration steps, refer to the SonicOS 8 Upgrade Guide for NSv Series.
