SonicOS 8 NSv Getting Started Guide for ESXi

Registering the NSv Virtual Machine in SonicOS

After you have installed and configured the network settings for your NSv Series virtual machine, you can log in to SonicOS management and register it in your MySonicWall account. Registration of your SonicWall NSv Series virtual machine follows the same process as for SonicWall hardware-based appliances.

System functionality is extremely limited when registration is not completed. For more information, see Using System Diagnostics.

To register your NSv virtual machine

  1. Point your browser to https://<X1 IP address>, using the public IP address of your NSv.

  2. Log into SonicOS using your default credentials.

Ensure to use the new password if you have updated the default password.

For more information, see Logging in to your NSv for SonicOS Management.

  3. Navigate to HOME | Dashboard > System > Summary.

  4. Click Register Device.

    The MySonicWall dialog box displays.

  5. Enter the MySonicWall Username and Password.

  6. Enter the Firewall Serial Number and Auth Code.

To obtain your serial number and authentication code, contact SonicWall Sales at https://www.sonicwall.com/customers/contact-sales.

  7. Select the Policy Mode Switching; Classic or Policy.

Classic Mode: Classic mode uses the traditional SonicOS interface for managing firewall rules. In this mode, configuration is organized into separate rule types such as access rules, NAT policies, routing, and VPN. Classic mode provides a detailed, list‑based view and is ideal for administrators who prefer the legacy SonicOS workflow.

Policy Mode: Policy mode offers a unified, policy‑centric interface for managing access, NAT, routing, and security rules in one place. Policies are displayed in a structured, readable layout that shows the relationship between sources, destinations, services, and actions. Policy mode simplifies administration, especially for larger environments, and aligns with the management style used in Network Security Manager (NSM).

  8. Click Register.

The Restarting Device warning message displays.

  9. After the device restarts, log in and confirm that the licensing is enabled.

If you are unable to access MySonicWall, navigate to DEVICE | Settings > Licenses and use the Keyset, Serial Number, Authorization, and Registration code provided by your SonicWall representative and click Apply.
