Overview

The CSE Chrome Extension is a browser extension for Google Chrome that connects users to Cloud Secure Edge without installing the desktop app or any other agent. For people who cannot or prefer not to install the desktop client, such as Chromebook users or contractors on unmanaged devices, it is a lighter way to get the same protected access from the browser. It provides two capabilities:

• Clientless access to Hosted Websites: end users reach internal web applications directly from the browser. The extension registers as a device, so it appears in your device inventory and can be targeted by roles, and it avoids the IP allowlisting that unregistered-device access requires.
• Internet Threat Protection (ITP): apply content filtering and reporting policies. Advanced policies (TLS-decryption features) are not supported through the extension.

When to use the extension

• Chromebook fleets, such as school districts, where the desktop app is not the right fit.
• Unmanaged or personal devices: contractors, third parties, or BYOD users who cannot or prefer not to install the desktop app.

Install and register

You can enroll the extension manually or distribute it through zero touch.

Manual install

1. Install the CSE Chrome Extension from the Chrome Web Store.
2. Enter your organization's invite code and complete the sign-in flow. This is the same registration flow used by the CSE desktop app.

Zero touch distribution

Distribute the extension to managed browsers through Zero Touch Chrome Enrollment and your Google Workspace MDM.
