Remote Desktop Connections to Windows Server 2008 Fail When Connecting from Older RDP Client

Scenario and Resolution:

SonicWall support has come accross an issue where a Remote Desktop Connection to a Windows 2008 server may fail for a client that is running an older version of the Remote Desktop Client.

Windows Server 2008 may be configured to allow only RDP version 6 clients to connect. If that's the case, you can change the server's settings to allow older clients to connect:

1. Open Control Panel.
2. Click System, and then click the Remote tab.
3. Change the option for Remote Desktop as shown in the screenshot below by selecting Allow connections from computers running any version of Remote Desktop:
