How can I encrypt a file to be shared with SonicWall?

Description

Occasionally SonicWall requires file transfers, a SonicWall TSR for example, via email. To provide a basic level of security, these files may be encrypted. One method of encryption on Windows devices is by using the free and open-source archive product 7zip.

DOWNLOAD 7ZIP

If 7zip is not already installed on your system, you will need to locate the proper installation package for your operating system. At the time of this writing, 7zip may be downloaded from https://www.7-zip.org/

Encrypt the file

  • In 7-Zip click FILE then OPEN. Navigate to the file you want to encrypt.

  • Consider using good password rules.
    At least 8 characters long
    At least one capital letter
    At least one lowercase letter
    At least one numeral
  • Click OK and an encrypted version of the file will be created inside a zip file. By default, you will find this next to the original file.A screenshot of a computer Description automatically generated

NOTE: At this point, you may send the encrypted 7zip archive. The password should be communicated to the recipient via a different message or medium when possible. If you no longer need the unencrypted version of the file, you may delete it. Once you have received confirmation that the archive has been received you may delete your copy if no longer needed.

CAUTION: If you mistype the password, or forget it, there will be no way to retrieve the data.
