Choosing the Mode in Fresh Deployments or Upgrades

During NSv registration, after fresh deployments or upgrades of existing NSv firewalls to SonicOS 8.2.1 or later versions, you are prompted to choose between Classic mode and Policy mode.

The specific use cases where this applies are:

• Fresh deployments of SonicOS 8.2.1 or later versions
• Upgrading an existing deployment to higher versions
• Resetting the registration of an existing deployment running SonicOS 8.2.1 or later versions

Choosing Classic Mode will cause the device to boot up running SonicOS 8.2.1 or later versions with classic mode features.

Choosing Policy Mode will cause the device to boot up running SonicOS 8.2.1 or later versions with policy mode features.

When upgrading an NSv firewall from SonicOS 8.2.1 to a higher version (Classic mode) using the SWI file, the supported features are on par with an NSv or hardware firewall running SonicOS 8.2.1, except that the following are not supported:

• Switch Network (SonicWall Switch management support)
• Access Points / Wireless
• WWAN and 4G/LTE
• PortShield

After upgrading your NSv firewall from SonicOS 8.2.1 to a higher version, you need to register it using the new serial number.
