SMA1000: Why are Java Bookmarks no Longer Working?

Description

Java-based RDP bookmarks configured on the SonicWall SMA 1000 series WorkPlace portal no longer function in Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge, Mozilla Firefox, or any other modern browser. This is because all major browsers have permanently removed support for NPAPI (Netscape Plugin Application Programming Interface), which was required to run Java applets in the browser. NPAPI was removed from Chrome in September 2015 (version 45), from Firefox in 2017 (version 52), and was never supported in Microsoft Edge.

Resolution

Migrate to HTML5 Bookmarks

SMA1000 firmware 11.4 and later includes HTML5-based RDP bookmarks, which do not require Java or any browser plugin. HTML5 bookmarks render the remote desktop session directly in the browser using WebSocket connections.

  1. Log in to the SMA1000 AMC.
  2. Navigate to Security Administration > WorkPlace.
  3. Edit the existing RDP bookmark or create a new one.
  4. In the bookmark configuration, set the Access Method to HTML5. (On older firmware, this may appear as "Browser-based" or "Web-based.")
  5. Enter the target server hostname or IP address and port (default: 3389).
  6. Save the bookmark and test the connection from the WorkPlace portal.

Important: HTML5 RDP bookmarks do not support all features available in native RDP clients (for example, multi-monitor, drive redirection, or audio redirection may be limited). For full-featured RDP access, users should connect via Connect Tunnel or Mobile Connect and launch the native Remote Desktop client (mstsc.exe or Windows App) directly.

Alternative: Native RDP Through VPN Tunnel

For users who need full RDP functionality, the recommended approach is:

  1. Connect to the SMA1000 VPN using Connect Tunnel or Mobile Connect.
  2. Open the native Remote Desktop client on the local machine (mstsc.exe on Windows, Microsoft Remote Desktop on macOS).
  3. Enter the target server hostname or IP address and connect. The RDP session runs through the VPN tunnel with full native client capabilities.
