Windows Defender Smartscreen in Edge is blocking SonicWall's Rewritten Sandboxing URL

Description

Due to a recent update to the Edge Browser and the SmartScreen technology that is part of Microsoft Defender, the chromium-based Edge browser is now treating SonicWall's rewritten URL page as being malicious.

Resolution

Customers who use edge as their default browser, have two potential paths.

  • They can copy the corresponding link into the clipboard and then paste it into an alternate browser. If the link is opened in Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Opera, or any other browser the condition shouldn't be present.
  • The other has been documented by Microsoft on their web page

Question: One of the sites I visit is being flagged by Microsoft Defender SmartScreen, but it's not an unsafe website. What can I do?

    Answer
: Click the link for More information then click Report that this site does not contain threats.

SonicWall is not suggesting to anyone that they disable the SmartScreen protection feature in Edge as multiple levels of added and unrelated security are always recommended. Currently we are only suggesting to open the specific link using a different browser installed on the affected system.

For all affected customers, it is strongly recommended they reach out to Microsoft directly using their feedback process to relay the current block is a False Positive response of their SmartScreen technology.
