TZ GEN8 Console Port Access Guide - Micro-USB Console Port

SonicWall TZ Generation 8 (GEN8) firewalls feature a Micro-USB console port for CLI access, simplifying connections compared to older RJ45-based models. This article provides step-by-step instructions for technicians at all levels.

Older TZ series (e.g., GEN7) have both RJ45 and Micro-USB options, but GEN8 prioritizes Micro-USB for easier modern laptop connectivity without adapters, supporting the same standard parameters as below.

• Baud rate: 115,200
• Data bits: 8
• Parity: None
• Stop bits: 1
• Flow control: None

Requirements

• A SonicWall UTM appliance.
• Micro-USB cable.
• Terminal emulator: PuTTY, Tera Term, or SecureCRT.
• A computer with a USB port.
• Firewall login credentials.

Connection Steps

1. Power on the firewall and locate the Micro-USB console port on the back.
2. Connect the cable: Plug the Micro-USB end into firewall console port; the USB-A end into your computer.
3. Identify COM port: Open Device Manager > Ports (COM & LPT) to note the new COM port (e.g., Prolific PL2303GL USB Serial COM Port (COM6)). Please refer to the picture below.
