Sonicwall, How to Ping WAN Interface IP from devices connected behind LAN zone

Description

This article explains how to configure rules to allow LAN devices to ping WAN Interface IP. This alllows devices behind LAN to PING WAN management/Interface IP.

Resolution for SonicOS 7.X

This release includes significant user interface changes and many new features that are different from the SonicOS 6.5 and earlier firmware. The below resolution is for customers using SonicOS 7.X firmware.

Configuring NAT Policy.

  1.  Navigate to Policy | Rules and policies | NAT Rules | Click Add
  2.  Configure NAT Rule as given below.
  • Original Source: LAN subnets
  • Translated Source: Original
  • Original Destination: X1 IP
  • Translated Destination: Original
  • Original Service: Ping
  • Translated Service: Original
  • Inbound Interface: Any
  • Outbound Interface: Any

Configuring Access rule.

  1. Navigate to Policy | Rules and policies | Access Rules | Click Add
  2. Configure LAN to WAN Default rule | Optional settings | Enable "Allow management traffic"

  • Now from all LAN devices, we should be able to ping X1 WAN IP.

  1. Navigate to Manage | Policies |Rules | Nat policies | Click on Add.
  2. Configure NAT Rule as given below.
  • Original Source: LAN subnets
  • Translated Source: Original
  • Original Destination: X1 IP
  • Translated Destination: Original
  • Original Service: Ping
  • Translated Service: Original
  • Inbound Interface: Any
  • Outbound Interface: Any

  1. Navigate to Manage | Policies |Rules | Access Rules | Click on Add.
  2. Configure LAN to WAN Default rule | Enable option "Enable management"
