Description

SonicOS: Configuring a PPPoA Router/Modem to Work with Your SonicWall

Resolution

You can configure a DSL modem with a PPPoA provider to connect with a SonicWall, enabling Internet access to computers behind its LAN. If the PPPoA modem can be configured in Bridge mode, then the SonicWall will receive a public IP address and double NATTING can be avoided. Follow these steps to setup the proposed scenario:

  1. Connect the phone cable to the WAN interface of the PPPoA modem.
  2. Connect the LAN interface of the PPPoA modem to the SonicWall WAN interface.
  3. Configure the PPPoA modem as follows:
    • WAN IP: ISP Assigned public IP (Static or Dynamic)
    • LAN IP: 192.168.0.1/24
  4. Configure the SonicWall as follows:>
    • WAN IP: 192.168.0.254/24 (Static or Dynamic if DHCP is configured on PPPoA modem)
    • LAN IP: 10.0.0.1/24
    • Configure the DNS settings on the SonicWall to those supplied by the provider.
  5. Computers connected to the LAN of the SonicWall will now have the 10.0.0.0/24 subnet.
  6. Connect the SonicWall LAN interface to the LAN computers (Switch/HUB).
