How to view SonicWall IP while doing trace route to any external IP?

Description

Administrators while running certain test in the network might need to verify if the traffic is passing through the SonicWall or not through some utility tools like running trace route.

By default SonicWall will hide its interface IP because of the security reason.

EXAMPLE:

A simple example to show by running a network path for 8.8.8.8 from the local network of the SonicWall. Notice that the path does not include the firewall IP and directly sends to the upstream device :

Resolution

For monitoring  and testing purpose, Administrators can follow the below steps to reveal the firewall IP :

  1. Navigate to Manage |Security Configurations| Firewall Settings |Advanced Settings
  2. Under Detection Prevention, enable the option Decrement IP TTL for forwarded traffic

Run the same trace route again form the previous example and notice the change:

TIP: It is always advisable to keep the option unchecked after the testing is done for the security purpose.
