How to solve - "Illegal image filename. Extension .bin.sig is expected" error while uploading firmware file?

Description

In this article you will find how you can solve the error "Illegal image filename. Extension .bin.sig is expected."

Resolution

The error message appears after you select the firmware update file to be uploaded in the firewall. It will start the process of uploading, but at the end you will get this error message.

This issue is generally observed when the same firmware file is downloaded multiple times to the same location or folder on your PC/system. In such cases, the system appends a number (e.g., "(1)") to the file name—for example:

sw_tz_370.7.2.0-7015-R4295-HF52705.bin (1).sig.

Hence, creating a bad syntax for the firmware file name.Ā

Expected File name with correct syntax : sw_tz_370.7.2.0-7015-R4295-HF52705.bin.sig

Ā

The steps you have to follow to solve this are the following:

  1. If the firmware failed to upload because of above mentioned reason, please correct the name of the firmware file to above mentioned "Expected File name" and try to re-upload the firmware. And if it successfully uploads, then go ahead and boot into current configuration. If this didn't help, go to next step #2.Ā
  2. Power cycle the firewall, that is remove the power from it, wait for 2 mins and re-plug the power. Then try to upload the firmware file, ensure it has the correct firmware file name as per "Expected file name" If the problem persists, please proceed to step #3.
  3. Boot the firewall in safemode and try to upload the file named correctly again. You can follow this article if you don't know how to boot your SonicWall into safemode.Ā
