How to enable Content Filtering on NSV SonicOSX in Policy mode.

Description

In this KB we will enable content filtering using security policies.

EXAMPLE: We have blocked the Sports category (44)  and we will allow “as.com and marca.com” as an exclusion.

Resolution

  • Make sure that Content Filtering status is ''READY''.
    Navigate to
Policy | Rules and Policies | Settings
    Image
  • Add an Action Profile under Object | Action Profile | Security Action Profile
  • Then enable Enable Content Filtering Action and Log within the Content Filter Tab within the action profile.Image
  • Create a Web Category, in this example we are blocking category 44 - Sport.
Navigate to Object | Match Objects | Web Categories
    Image
  • Create a Deny Security policy, and add the Action Profile and the Web Category created previously.
Navigate to Policy | Rules and Policies | Security Policy
    Image
  • We can verify that this rule is getting triggered from within the GUI: Under Logged Events we will find the log for Web Access denied, due to Category Block
Navigate to Monitor | Logs | System Logs

Whitelisting a URL:

Here we will allow/whitelist URL’s that are categorized as 44 - Sport, for example “as.com”

Tip: You can use ‘’Lookup Rating for URL’’ for checking the categories, related to a URL.

  • Navigate to Device | Diagnostics | URL Rating Request
    Image
  • Create a URI list under Object | Match Objects | URI Lists
    Image
  • Create a new Security Policy, that has a Higher priority than the Deny Rule we created previously under Policy | Rules and Policies | Security PolicyImage

NOTE:In this scenario, the security policy order is important, once the firewall gets a match, it will not check any further rules. Image
