SMA1000: How to Configure the Initial Setup Wizard on SMA8200v

Description

After deploying the SMA 8200v virtual appliance and configuring the initial network settings through the VM console, you can access the Appliance Management Console (AMC) at https://<appliance-IP>:8443. The first time you access AMC, the Setup Wizard launches automatically and guides you through the required and optional steps to get the appliance operational.

Prerequisites

  • SMA 8200v virtual machine deployed on a supported hypervisor
  • Initial network configuration completed via the VM console (IP address assigned)
  • AMC accessible from a management workstation at https://<appliance-IP>:8443

Resolution

Complete the Setup Wizard by following each step below. The wizard presents the steps in order; click Next to advance or Back to return to a previous step.

1. The Welcome page provides an overview of the wizard steps: Basic Settings, Network Settings, Routing, Name Resolution, and User Access. Review the summary and click Next to begin.

2. Read the End User License Agreement. Select "I accept the terms of the license agreement" and click Next to continue.

 3. Configure the following settings:

  • Central Management: Check this box only if you are configuring this appliance as a Central Management Server (CMS) to manage a pool of SMA appliances. Leave unchecked for a standalone SMA appliance.
  • Administrator password: Set the password for the AMC admin account. Must be at least eight characters.
  • Date and time: Select the correct time zone. Click Change to set the current time, or configure NTP synchronization later in the AMC.

 4.  Configure the appliance name and network interfaces:

  • Appliance name: Enter a descriptive name for identification in logs and AMC.
  • Interface mode: Select Dual interfaces for a DMZ deployment with separate internal and external interfaces, or Single interface for a single-homed configuration.
  • IP address and Subnet mask: Configure the internal and (if dual-homed) external interface addresses.

5. Set the default gateway IP address. This gateway must be on the same subnet as the internal interface. If you need to access AMC from a different subnet, the default gateway must be able to route traffic to that subnet. Additional static routes can be configured later in the AMC.

6. Enter the default domain name (e.g., yourcompany.com) and the primary DNS server IP address. The appliance uses DNS to resolve internal resource names. Additional DNS servers can be added later in AMC.

7. Configure the initial access method and access policy:

  • Access Method: Check "Enable full network access using OnDemand Tunnel" to provision the tunnel agent. If enabled, enter a NAT address for network tunnel traffic (must be on the same subnet as the internal interface and not in use elsewhere).
  • Access Policy: Select the initial access policy for users.  "Allow authenticated users access to all defined resources" (recommended for initial setup), or "Initially deny all access." This can be refined later in AMC.

8. The Completion page displays a summary of all configured settings. Review the summary and click Finish to apply. The appliance restarts — this may take several minutes. After restart, the AMC login page appears. Log in with username "admin" and the password you set in Basic Settings.
