DESCRIPTION: Can same VAP group be added to A and G radio type when using VLANs
Can you add the same VAP group to the A and G radio type when using VLANs?
This was a "by design" simplification for an easier VAP implementation. The same VAP (VLAN ID / SSID pairing) cannot go to two different radios (A and G) of the same SonicPoint.
Forcing clients to choose between 802.11b or 802.11a wireless networks has the advantage of improved roaming speeds. This is because wireless clients can be configured to either only scan the 2.4 GHZ (802.11b) channels or only scan the 5.4 GHz (802.11a) channels.
Note that radios do not advertise VLAN IDs. They advertise SSIDs. For each SSID, the AP mantains an association table with the wireless MAC address of the connected wireless client. This is how the AP knows how to tag the VLAN ID for incoming wireless packets and also knows which BSSID to use for outgoing wireless packets (the AP uses a different BSSID for each SSID).
Note: This only applies SonicPoint A/B/G and does not apply to other SonicPoints including SonicPoint-N Dual-Band
