Description
This article describes how to take a Backup and restore the settings for a Standalone switch.
- When we are exporting the configuration on switch A we need to check the switch uplink ports. (As shown in the below diag)
- We need to check the switch-up link ports on switch B (As shown in the below diag)
- The export and import works between SonicWall switches only when both switches A and B use different switch uplink ports.
EXAMPLE: Switch A uplink is port 1 then connect a PC or laptop on switch B on other ports, not on the uplink port 1. - If switch A uses port 1 as a switch uplink port with other vlan tagging then we need to use the other port on the switch B which is not part of that vlan tagging or default ports.
- Once the settings are imported from switch A to switch B. The switch B will be rebooted to the factory default IP with all VLAN tag setup imported successfully.
(If you wish to change the switch IP address, you can change it later once the setting is imported successfully)
Resolution
EXAMPLE: For Firewall & WNM-managed switches it doesn't require to take a backup as it's stored on the respective controller i.e Firewall & WNM . Although you can follow the same steps as mentioned for the Standalone switch to take backup, it's not recommended to RESTORE the settings in the same manner. Let the switch sync with the respective controller and acquire the settings.
There are two ways to take the backup of standalone switches:
- From switch local GUI (Only supported on firmware version 1.1.1.0-2 & above)
- From switch CLI via TFTP server (supported on all firmware versions)

For the following example this is my setup:
Steps for taking backup from Local GUI
- Login to the switch GUI
- Goto System --> Backup/Restore --> Select Backup --> Click on Apply
- Success message will pop-up, Check the downloads and click on "Keep" file
You should see a filename for ex: "SWS14-48FPOE_v1.2.0.0-3.cfg"

Steps for Restoring a backup from Local GUI
- Login to the switch GUI
- Goto System --> Backup/Restore --> Select Restore
- Click on Browse --> Select the switch config file backed up before, Ex. "SWS14-48FPOE_v1.2.0.0-3.cfg" --> Click on Open --> Click on Apply
- Warning Pop-window will appear --> Click on "Confirm"
- Settings will be restored, this process will take a few mins.

Taking Backup & Restore via CLI using TFTP server
- Deploy a TFTP server if don't have it already & make sure the TFTP Server is able to communicate with the switch on L3 i.e you can ping from the TFTP server to switch and vice-versa.
- For this Example I have a PC running TFTP server connected directly to the switch and it's able to ping successfully
- Login to the switch CLI either via SSH or Console and follow the commands.
Command Syntax:
-----------------------
SWS14-48FPOE login: admin
Password:
SWS14-48FPOE#
SWS14-48FPOE# copy startup-config tftp:// server ip>/filename **For taking backup to TFTP Server**
SWS14-48FPOE# copy tftp:// server ip>/ filename startup-config **For restoring backup from TFTP server**
----------------------
EXAMPLE:
# copy startup-config tftp://192.168.168.1/myfile
# copy tftp://192.168.168.1/myfile startup-config
