Description
It may be desirable or necessary to manually adjust Ethernet settings in situations including, but not limited to the following:
- You are unable to establish a connection with a cable modem or upstream router despite correct cabling.
- Performance is unacceptable for LAN users behind the SonicWall appliance accessing the Internet.
- Compatibility issues may exist with certain Ethernet devices necessitating forced or hard coded settings.
CAUTION: If you select a specific Ethernet speed and duplex, you must force the connection speed and duplex from the Ethernet card to the SonicWall as well.

- Auto-negotiation must be enabled on both sides.
- FIXING SPEED/DUPLEX must be done on both sides.
- You can not have one side fixed, other side auto (When doing this, you will see the fixed side say at 100 MB FD, and the auto come up with 100 MB HD, which leads to DUPLEXING errors).
- You must have a CAT 5 cable WITH correct pinning (remember Ethernet uses 1,2,3,6).Do not split (e.g. 1=white orange, 2=orange, 3=white green, 4=green etc…) to be able to do 100 MB FD (If this is NOT met, you can’t get more then 10 MB Half Duplex over the link).
- You must have a CAT 5e cable WITH correct pinning (ALL 8 cables / 4 pairs) to be able to run GIGABIT.
- A Gigabit cross over cable, crosses ALL 4 Pairs (the cross over cables that USED to come with PRO’s only had 2 pairs crossed).
- Duplex mismatches are bad and can cause a huge amount of packet loss.
