How to block Google Plus using App Control Advanced

Description:

This is a scenario based article of the SonicWall App Control Advanced feature. In this scenario we describe how to block Google Plus.

Procedure:

  • Login to the SonicWall Management GUI.
  • Navigate to the Firewall > App Control Advanced page. In Gen5 TZ devices this page is under Security Services > App Control
  • Check the box under Enable App Control  and click on the Accept button at the top to enable App Control.
  • Under App Control Advanced > View Style select Social Networking under Category; select Google Plus under Application; select Signature under Viewed By.

Note: Most of the signatures for Google Plus are to block HTTP access of Google Plus. To block Google Plus over HTTPS (SSL) requires Client DPI-SSL

  • Click on the configure icon under Application with Google Plus selected.
  • In the Edit App Control App window, select Enable under Block and Log.
  • Click on OK to save.

This will block HTTP access to Google Plus completely. To block an activity within Google Plus, without blocking access to Google Plus itself, follow these steps:

  • Click on the configure icon alongside the signature to open the Edit App Control Signature window.
  • Select Enable under Block and Log.
  • Click on OK to save.

Enabling Application Control on zones

  • Navigate to Network > Zones
  • Click on the configure button under the zone where you want enable App Control.
  • Check Enable App Control Service.
  • Click on OK to save.
