How to do packet capture in the SonicWall Netextender client?

Description

SonicWall NetExtender Client can be used to capture the packets exchanged between the client machine and the SonicWall through the SSL VPN connection. This article explains the steps to configure the NetExtender client and capture the packets.

Resolution



Step 1: Enabling the Packet capture option: Packet capture option in the Netextender client will be disabled by default. To enable the Packet capture option click on the Settings icon as shown in the screen shot below:

In the Netextender Properties Window, click on Packet capture and then Enable the check box 'Enable Netextender Packet Capture' and then Click on OK to Apply the settings.

Note: Enabling the option Enable Netextender Packet Capture requires Admin Privilege.

Step 2: Capturing the Packets:
After enabling the Packet capture option in the Netextender Client options to configure the Packet monitor will appears in the Netextender Client.

Click on Start
Packet Capture to capture the packets in the Netextender Client once the SSL VPN connection is established. We can see the number of packets captures in the Packet monitor details itself.

Step 3: Saving the packet capture: Packet monitor will have options to Save
Packet Capture which will save the file in .cap format in a specified loaction, which ca be viewed later using the Wireshark Packet capture tool. It also have options to directly View Packet Capture or Delete Packet Capture from the client.
