How to Allow Access to a Specific Network Share and Not Root

Resolution

Description:

This article gives a high-level overview of how to configure access to a specific network share on a server, but deny access to the root of the server.

Requirements:

The following must be created on the appliance before going through the procedure below:

  • Set up two network share resources:
    • One should point to the root of the server.  For example: \server
    • The other should point to a specific share on that server.  For example: \servershare

Procedure:

To configure Access Control rules so that they restrict access to the root of the server but allow access to the share, you need to configure rules as such:

  1. In the Aventail Management Console (AMC), click Access Control, and create a new Permit rule from a "user" to the specific network share resource you created earlier (\servershare). Save this rule when finished.
  2. Now, create a Deny rule below the previous rule from "user" to the root of the server.  Use the \server resource you created earlier.  Save this rule when finished.
  3. Save and apply your changes in AMC.
