What Chipset do SonicWall TZ Wireless or SonicWave series devices use ?

Description

Whether SonicWall TZ Wireless or SonicWave series devices use Broadcom Wi-Fi chipsets, following reports of a recently disclosed vulnerability affecting Broadcom-based wireless devices.

Vulnerability Overview

A high-severity flaw has been identified in Broadcom Wi-Fi chipset firmware that allows an attacker within radio range to disrupt wireless networks by sending a specially crafted Wi-Fi frame. This can lead to a denial-of-service (DoS) condition where the 5 GHz Wi-Fi radio becomes unresponsive, disconnecting clients and often requiring a manual reboot to restore service.

 

How It Works:

               The issue exists at the chipset firmware level.

               The attack does not require authentication or valid Wi-Fi credentials.

               WPA2/WPA3 protections do not mitigate the issue, as it operates below the encryption layer.

               Only 5 GHz Wi-Fi is affected; 2.4 GHz and wired connections are not impacted.

Impact and Severity:

               The attack can be repeatedly triggered, causing persistent wireless outages.

               The vulnerability has been rated high severity (approximately 8.4 CVSS score).

               Multiple vendors using affected Broadcom chipsets may be impacted, though a full list has not been publicly disclosed.

Mitigation:

               Broadcom has released patches to device manufacturers.

               Some vendors have already issued firmware updates.

               Applying the latest firmware is recommended once updates are available.

Resolution

SonicWall do not use Broadcom.
Gen8 TZ series use MTK Chipset
Others including Gen7 and SonicWave all use Qualcomm Chipset.
