Configuring storm control on SonicWall Switch

Description

Storm Control limits the amount of Broadcast, Unknown Multicast, and Unknown Unicast frames accepted and forwarded by the Switch. Storm Control can be enabled per port by defining the packet type and the rate at which the packets are transmitted. The Switch measures the incoming Broadcast, Unknown Multicast, and Unknown Unicast frame rates separately on each port, and discards the frames when the rate exceeds a user-defined rate.

Broadcast Enable

Enter the broadcast rate in kilobits per second. The Gigabit Ethernet ports have a maximum speed of 1000000 kilobits per second. If the rate of broadcast traffic ingress on the interface increases beyond the configured threshold, the traffic is dropped.

Unknown Multicast

Enter the Unknown Multicast rate in kilobits per second. The Gigabit Ethernet ports have a maximum speed of 1000000 kilobits per second. If the rate of broadcast traffic ingress on the interface increases beyond the configured threshold, the traffic is dropped.

Unknown Unicast

Enter the Unknown Unicast rate in kilobits per second. The Gigabit Ethernet ports have a maximum speed of 1000000 kilobits per second. If the rate of broadcast traffic ingress on the interface increases beyond the configured threshold, the traffic is dropped.

Resolution for GEN7 Firewall-Managed Switches

  1. Navigate to Device |Switch Network |Overview
  2. Select the Switch and edit the port
  3. Navigate to Advanced Tab | STORM CONTROL SETTINGS

    Image
  4. Click on Confirm

TIP: If the value is set to 0 then it is set to disabled. The rate must be a multiple of 16. Range: 0 - 10000000.

Resolution for Cloud Managed Switches:

  1. Log in to wcm.sonicwall.com
  2. Make sure you have selected the correct Tenant
  3. Navigate to Network | Devices |Select the Switch

  4. Edit the Switch | Navigate to Ports | QoS-Storm Control
  5. Select the port and configure it accordingly. Below is an example.

  6. Click on OK

TIP:  If the value is set to 0 then it is set to disabled. The rate must be a multiple of 16. Range: 0 - 10000000.

Resolution for Standalone Switches:

  1. Navigate to Switching |Port Settings | Edit port

  3. Click on SAVE.

TIP: If the value is set to 0 then it is set to disabled. The rate must be a multiple of 16. Range: 0 - 10000000.

Storm Control Settings

  • Broadcast: Enter the broadcast rate in kilobits per second. The Gigabit Ethernet ports have a maximum speed of 1000000 kilobits per second. If the rate of broadcast traffic ingress on the interface increases beyond the configured threshold, the traffic is dropped.
  • Unknown Multicast: Enter the Unknown Multicast rate in kilobits per second. The Gigabit Ethernet ports have a maximum speed of 1000000 kilobits per second. If the rate of multicast traffic ingress on the interface increases beyond the configured threshold, the traffic is dropped.
  • Unknown Unicast: Enter the Unknown Unicast rate in kilobits per second. The Gigabit Ethernet ports have a maximum speed of 1000000 kilobits per second. If the rate of unicast traffic ingress on the interface increases beyond the configured threshold, the traffic is dropped.

TIP: If the Value is set to 0 then it is set to disabled. Rate must be multiple of 16 Range: 0 - 10000000.
