SMA1000: How to Enable 10Gb SPF+ Interfaces on SMA7210

Description

The SMA7210 appliance includes dedicated 10Gb SFP+ network interfaces that can be enabled for higher bandwidth connectivity. By default, SMA7210 appliances operate using the built-in 1Gb interfaces (X0/X1). Enabling the 10Gb interfaces changes the appliance networking configuration and management accessibility.

This article describes how to safely enable the 10Gb SFP+ interfaces and avoid loss of management access during the transition.

Resolution

Prerequisites

Before enabling the 10Gb interfaces, ensure the following:

  • Compatible 10Gb SFP+ transceivers are installed.
  • The connected switch ports are configured and operational.
  • Network connectivity through the 10Gb interface has been verified.
  • A management workstation can reach the IP address that will be assigned to the 10Gb interface.
  • Console access is available in case network connectivity must be recovered.

Important: Management access should be validated over the 10Gb interface before committing the configuration change.

Procedure

  1. Log in to the Appliance Management Console (AMC).

  2. Navigate to:

    System > Settings > Network

  3. Locate the Enable 10Gb Interface option.

  4. Configure the desired network settings for the 10Gb SFP+ interface, including:

  5. Verify that the connected network can successfully communicate with the configured 10Gb interface.

  6. Select Accept.

  7. Select Commit to apply the change (changes take effect immediately after the commit operation.)

Critical Behavior You Must Understand Before Committing

When the Enable 10Gb Interface option is enabled and the configuration is committed, the appliance automatically performs several hardware-level network changes:

  • All 1Gb interfaces (X0 and X1) are disabled.
  • The 1Gb interfaces are no longer routable by default.
  • The Appliance Management Console (AMC) becomes reachable only through the enabled 10Gb interface.
  • You must pre-stage and validate management reachability through the 10Gb interface before committing the configuration.
  • If management access is lost, console access may be required to restore connectivity.
