How to configure log automation using Gmail?

Description

This articles explains how to configure the log automation using gmail account. In this scenario the 2FA is enabled on the gmail account and uses app passwords to setup log automation.

Resolution

  • To Configure the log automation navigate to Device | Log | Automation | Mail Server Settings.
  • Mail Server (name or IP address):- smtp.gmail.com
  • From Email address:- Mention the gmail Ex:- test@gmail.com
  • Click on Advanced
  • SMTP Port= 25.
  • Connection Security Method= STARTLS.

  • Enable SMTP Authentication.
  • To setup username and password, login to gmail account.
  • Navigate to https://myaccount.google.com/apppasswords
  • Create a new app specific password, in this case we created test.

  • This will generate an app password, please copy the code.

  • Login to the firewall and navigate to Device | Log | Automation | Mail Server Settings.
  • Click on Advanced
  • Enter the user name as we created on gmail "test".
  • Enter the password as we generated in gmail app password.
  • Click on Add.
  • Click on Accept.
  • Click on Test settings, "The mail settings are OK" message should show.
  • If the server settings are are still failing, open the command prompt and run the below commands.
  • nslookup.
  • set q=mx
  • gmail.com
  • This will give us the mail servers for the domain and we can use any one of it as shown below.Image
  • Test mail settings, it should show us the message "The Mail settings are Ok".

  • The log automation configured successfully on the firewall using gmail.
