How to check services status on Exchange when mail flow is down

Description

After installing update on exchange or when update do not get installed successfully, Inbound and outbound mail flow may stop working as services on Exchange can still be in an inactive state even if it shows running under services.msc.

Resolution


Step 1

Check SMTPReceive logs on Exchange and try to send an email to the exchange via telnet and it may show below error-
 
421 4.3.2 Service not active
 
Step 2

Open Exchange PowerShell  and run below command to check service status and all services will be in Inactive state
 
Get-ServerComponentState -Identity <ServerName>

Now Run below command to make all services to Active state
 
Set-ServerComponentState -State Active -Requester Functional -Identity <servername> -Component ServerWideOffline

All services status will change to active state.
 

Note- It may take 15-20 minutes to clear the pending task and to start mail flow.
