How to Block Google Drive using App Control Advanced

This article describes how to block Google Drive using App Control Advanced.

Resolution for SonicOS 7.X

This release includes significant user interface changes and many new features that are different from the SonicOS 6.5 and earlier firmware. The below resolution is for customers using SonicOS 7.X firmware.


  1. Login to the SonicWall Management GUI.
  2. Click Policy in the top navigation menu.
  3. Navigate to the Security Services | Application Control | Status/Settings page.
  4. Check the box under Enable App Controll
  5. Click on the Accept button at the top to enable App Control.
  6. Under App Control Signatures | View Style select BACKUP-APPS under Category, Select Google Drive under Application and Select Application under Viewed By.
  7. Click on Edit. You will see a Warning Message: Application's Block setting is the same as the Category to which it belongs. Your exception may not work as desired. Please double check and update your application's Block settings.Click on OK if your sure that, you have not configured the same on Category Block.

  1. Click on the configure icon under Application with Google Docs selected.
  2. In the App Control App Settings window, select Enable under Block and Log.
  3. Click on OK to save.

Enabling Application Control on zones

  1. Navigate to Object | Match Objects | Zones
  2. Click on the configure button under the zone where you want enable App Control.
  3. Check Enable App Control Service.
  4. Click on OK to save.

Resolution for SonicOS 6.5

This release includes significant user interface changes and many new features that are different from the SonicOS 6.2 and earlier firmware. The below resolution is for customers using SonicOS 6.5 firmware.


Login to the SonicWall Management GUI.

  1. Click Manage in the top navigation menu.
  2. Navigate to the Rules | Advanced Application Control page. 
  3. Check the box under Enable App Control 
  4. Click on the Accept button at the top to enable App Control.
  5. Under App Control Advanced | View Style select BACKUP-APPS under Category. Select Google Drive under Application
  6. Select Application under Viewed By.
  7. Click on Edit. You will see a Warning Message: Application's Block setting is the same as the Category to which it belongs. Your exception may not work as desired. Please double check and update your application's Block settings.Click on OK if your sure that, you have not configured the same on Category Block
  8. Click on OK

  • In the Edit App Control App window, select Enable under Block and Log.
  • Click on OK to save.

  1. Click Manage in the top navigation menu
  2. Navigate to Network | Zones.
  3. Click on the configure button under the zone where you want enable App Control.
  4. Check Enable App Control Service.
  5. Click OK.

Resolution for SonicOS 6.2 and Below

The below resolution is for customers using SonicOS 6.2 and earlier firmware. For firewalls that are generation 6 and newer we suggest to upgrade to the latest general release of SonicOS 6.5 firmware.


  • Login to the SonicWall Management GUI.
  • Navigate to the Firewall | App Control Advanced page. In Gen5 TZ devices this page is under Security Services | App Control.
  • Check the box under Enable App Control  and click on the Accept button at the top to enable App Control.
  • Under App Control Advanced | View Style select DOWNLOAD-APPS under Category.
  • Select Google Drive under Application
  • Select Signature under Viewed By.

  • Click on OK to save.
