Secure Mobile Access 8200v Getting Started Guide

Upgrading the 8200v Virtual Appliance

The Linux kernel used by SMA 12.0 does not support the older network adapters used in previous versions of SMA 8200v. Consequently, SMA 11.3 and earlier virtual appliances cannot be upgraded to SMA 12.0. Only SMA 11.4 virtual appliances can be upgraded to SMA 12.0.

If you attempt to upgrade to SMA 12.0 from SMA 11.3 or earlier, the upgrade stops, and you get a message stating that you cannot upgrade from your current version.

If you attempt to upgrade to SMA 12.0 from SMA 11.4 or later, and you are using an ESX-based virtual appliance that is running the VMWare flexible network adapter, the upgrade also stops, and you get a message stating that you must manually configure the VMWare host with a VMXNET3 adapter before you can proceed.

*
NOTE: This applies to ESX-based virtual machines only. Hyper-V virtual machines are not affected.

The following CMS upgrades are known to have issues:

11.2.0 upgrading to 12.0.0 - upgrade fails
11.3.0 upgrading to 12.0.0 - upgrade fails
11.4.0 upgrading to 12.0.0 - works as expected

The following Enterprise Secure Mobile Access migrations are known to have issues:

There are two optional work-arounds to resolve these issues:

Change the network cards
Upgrade by importing the configuration
To upgrade an 8200v by changing the network cards:
1
Upgrade to SMA 11.4.
2
Note which networks the network cards are attached to.
3
Delete both network cards.
4
Add two new VMXNET3 network cards.
5
Reboot the virtual machine.
6
Proceed with an upgrade to SMA 12.0.
To upgrade an 8200v by importing the configuration:
1
Export the configuration from the current virtual machine to a local computer.
2
Deploy a new virtual machine.
3
Import the configuration from the local computer to the new virtual machine.
