Powering Up Your Security with SonicOS 7.3

by Asif Mujtaba

Upgrade to SonicOS 7.3 for smarter auto-updates, stronger default security, and streamlined management that keeps networks resilient from day one.

SonicOS 7.3 is here, bringing a wave of enhancements focused on security, usability, and operational efficiency across SonicWall’s firewall platforms. This latest release delivers meaningful updates that directly address real-world use cases, from simplified management and tighter policy control to a stronger security posture.

Why Upgrade to SonicOS 7.3?

Smarter, Seamless Auto-Upgrades — Even When Managed by NSM

SonicOS 7.3 enhances the auto-upgrade capability, allowing firewalls to auto-upgrade even when being managed by SonicWall Network Security Manager (NSM). Traditionally, firewall upgrades in managed environments required manual coordination, which often led to delayed upgrades or upgrades that were skipped entirely due to dependency mismatches. With SonicOS 7.3, auto-upgrade has evolved to work seamlessly in concert with NSM. This empowers IT admins to ensure their devices are always running the latest features and security updates with minimal effort, freeing them to worry about more pressing matters while trusting their devices are up to date.

Stronger Out-of-the-Box Protection
Security should never be an afterthought, and with SonicOS 7.3, it isn’t. Password complexity is enabled by default, and rate limiting is automatically turned on to help guard against brute-force attacks. Administrators can proactively invalidate potentially compromised local user passwords, while critical firmware updates are now default-enabled to reduce patching gaps. Together, these default behaviors help ensure a hardened security posture from day one without requiring additional configuration.
Better Wireless Experience for TZ Series

WAN failover and load balancing now work in station mode, which improves the handling of dropped connections or network changes, allowing for uninterrupted service.

Cloud Secure Edge (CSE) Improvements
  • Support for publishing routes outside the RFC1918 range to allow connections to any private resource through the firewall.
  • Support for more than 100 firewalls connecting to the same CSE organization.

The Bottom Line: Simple, Secure, and Synchronized

With SonicOS 7.3, you unlock:

  • Zero-touch auto-upgrades, even under NSM control
  • One-click diagnostics for faster support
  • Strong, secure defaults out of the box
