Stateful Packet Inspection
Understanding the difference between stateful and deep packet filtering is critical when it comes to securing your network. Consider the security you face at an airport. When an airport official compares your boarding pass to your identification, they are determining if you should be allowed to pass into the boarding area. This is quite similar to stateful packet inspection, the firewall checks to see if data packets were requested and should be allowed into the company's network. Given many threats can be viruses which originate from within the company’s e-mail service, this level of protection is easily by-passed.
Deep Packet Inspection & Continuously Updated Protection
Deep packet inspection can be understood by building on the airport analogy. In the airport, as you pass through security you not only have to show your boarding pass, but also your bag is scanned to determine if it contains dangerous articles. This extra step helps to not only establish that you belong on the plane, but also that the contents you are bringing aboard are safe and approved. This bag scanning is quite similar to deep packet inspection. SonicWALL TZ and PRO products utilize a deep packet inspection engine to match downloaded, e-mailed and compressed files against an extensive database of signatures written by the SonicWALL SonicALERT team and third-party sources. This comparison provides intelligent, real-time network security protection against sophisticated application layer and content-based attacks.
Importantly, new, more elusive viruses, Trojans, spyware, phishing attacks and worms emerge everyday, rendering even most advanced firewalls ineffective. The SonicWALL database of signatures is continuously updated to provide protection against these latest, emerging threats. Without these updated signatures, your network and data are at risk.
SonicWALL Gateway Anti-Virus, Anti-Spyware & Intrusion Prevention Service
SonicWALL deep packet inspection is packaged as the SonicWALL Gateway Anti-Virus, Anti-Spyware and Intrusion Prevention Service. By offering all of these solutions in one product, SonicWALL is offering not only a higher level of Internet security but also a Unified Threat Management (UTM) solution at a reasonable price. UTM is the ability of a single device to handle multiple types of Internet attacks.
The SonicWALL solution is unique in its ability to handle unlimited file sizes and virtually hundreds of thousands of concurrent downloads, providing ultimate scalability and performance for growing networks. As an added layer of security, SonicWALL Gateway Anti-Virus, Anti-Spyware and Intrusion Prevention Service provides application layer attack protection not only against external threats, but also against those originating inside the network.
