Pharmacy image spam relents

The high-volume attack featuring pharmacy spam images in newsletter subscription templates has subsided.

We are seeing smaller volumes of spam in English, with a converse increase in the proportion of Russian spam.

Spam messages are using subject lines like these examples:

Current news topics

·         "Squarebutts" Ad Bad For Kids?

·         `ER' Says Goodbye After 15 Years

·         Mexican Congress debates legalizing marijuana

·         US to work with Switzerland on tax secrecy

·         Zardari: We Underestimated Taliban Threat

Sexually suggestive

·         Aguilera shows all she's got

·         Jessica Simpson exposed body

·         Jolie's amateur tape

·         Kelly Clarkson brutally raped

Vulgar, Sensationalistic

·         Drunk Rihanna showing off

·         Emma Watson taped drunk

·         Gorgeous diva drunk!

·         Write me back, bastard

Many spam messages contain up to ten words - usually a headline, or sometimes a sentence - of news material. Such  apparently pointless messages are probably Directory Harvest Attack (DHA) spam.

Examples of body content:

·         Chevron profits to fall sharply

·         Decision likely in US torture case in Spain

·         EU to sue Britain over Internet privacy

·         Obama Hosts Passover Seder Dinner

·         Phil Spector Guilty Of 2nd Degree Murder

Another numerous type contains a male potency pharmaceutical sentence, a single link to a pharmacy website, and another line or two of anti-virus information or a quotation. Links lead to websites selling pharmaceutical and herbal products.
